Commemorating Anzac Day 2026

There are very few occasions when we gather together as a whole school community. For over 1600 students and staff to congregate is a huge undertaking. Remembering those who served our country and fought for the freedoms we enjoy however, is one such occasion.

On Friday, 24 April, the Aitken College community gathered in a respectful and moving service to commemorate Anzac Day.

A traditional Scottish lament, Flowers of the Forest, called attendees to focus on the solemn service ahead.

We were joined by members of the 35 Army Cadets from Broadmeadows, who formed the catafalque party, moving with precision to stand gaurd around the flagpole.

An Acknowledgement of Country, prayers and stories of that first Anzac Day were shared with students and staff through the 30 minute service.

The reflection was shared by Rev Steve Terrell (Uniting Church), the Deputy Command Chaplain for Australian Army Cadets - Victoria.

As The Last Post rang out across the school grounds, a single member of the cadet unit, lowered the flag, year one students placed a wreath of remembrance and we observed one minutes silence, in honour of the fallen. As Reveille was played, the flag was raised again.

Members of our Vox Pop Choir performed, Spirit of the Anzacs, before our Brookhill Captains led Prayers for Peace. Students stood for the National Anthem before our College Chaplain, Rev Blakemore offered a final blessing.

We thank the students, staff and visitors who took part in the service, especially our student leaders who read and offered the prayers.
