The class of 2038: Our Newest Students Building Independence

The start of the school year always brings a special kind of magic to Aitken College, and nowhere is that more evident than in our Prep classrooms. New uniforms, eager smiles and curious questions fill our learning spaces as our youngest learners take their first steps into formal schooling. For families and staff alike, this time is filled with excitement, anticipation and the promise of a wonderful year ahead. 

From the moment they arrive, our Prep students begin building friendships, learning routines and discovering that school is a place where they are safe, supported and inspired to grow. Already, we have seen students confidently recognising their names, exploring new learning spaces and embracing the joy of learning through play and inquiry. 

Our Prep teachers work closely together to ensure each child feels welcomed and valued. Through carefully planned activities and gentle routines, students begin to understand what it means to be part of a learning community. Prep teacher, Ms Harding  shared, It has been nice to see the students become more confident each day as they build their independence. I love seeing them walk in the door with smiles on their faces.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) plays a central role in our Prep learning experiences. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and learn through meaningful, hands-on activities. Through guided inquiry, children begin to understand who they are, how they connect with others and how they make sense of the world around them. 

Alongside learning within the classroom, students participate in specialist programs such as Performing Arts, Physical Education, RVE, Visual Arts and Library, broadening their experiences and nurturing creativity and wellbeing. These opportunities help students discover new passions while developing confidence across a range of learning areas. 

For me personally, the Prep journey is not simply about learning letters and numbers. It is about transformation. These young learners arrive with curiosity, imagination and a sense of wonder. Over time, we see them grow into confident communicators, thoughtful thinkers and caring members of a community.  

Aitken College is unique in the way that many staff send their children to the college. Mr Taylor, Deputy Head of Secondary (Senior School Culture) shares this, We are absolutely thrilled to have another child attending Aitken College and to continue our family's journey with such a wonderful school community. Jace is very keen to begin and it’s exciting to watch our children thrive in an environment that nurtures learning and strong values. 

Growth in Prep is often seen in the small moments: a child bravely sharing an idea, writing their name independently for the first time, or forming a new friendship. As educators, we know that every child develops at their own pace, and our role is to nurture each learner’s unique path. By the end of the year, the change can be remarkable. An explosion of learning is something I always say describes Prep. 

At Aitken College, we treat all children as individuals and love getting to know them and their families throughout their school journey. 

Prep enrollments for 2027 have closed, but it is never too early to register your interest in your child attending Aitken College in the future.

Applications for Year 7 in 2028 are now open and close on 31 May.
