The range of activities on offer in the secondary school in Term 2 has been extensive. This brief overview of some highlights provides a small taste of the wonderful learning experiences available to our students.
Year 8 Werribee Gorge Excursion. All Year 8’s had the chance to complete a 10km hike through the beautiful Werribee River Gorge. Through this excursion students were able to observe some fascinating geological features that really brought to life the learning that was occurring in their science classrooms.
Central Australia Camp. In mid May, all of our Year 9’s attended our Central Australia Camp. This amazing camp is took our students to Kings Canyon, Uluru and Kata Junta. We strengthened our relationship with the Lilla Community, he traditional owners of the Kings Canyon region who have continuously lived on their land for thousands of years. The elders split our students into a boys groups and girls group, then took each group to their traditional gender sacred spaces and discussed what it means to be an integral person in both traditional and modern times.
RMIT mock interviews. Aitken continues to build a partnership with RMIT University. At the beginning of this term I was privileged to speak to some of the Masters of Teaching students and provide conduct mock interviews with them to help prepare them for the next chapter of their lives outside of University.
House Athletics & ACS Athletics. Early this term we had both our Dunhelen and Brookhill House Athletics Carnivals. These days helped develop a sense of house pride and a chance for all our students to participate and enjoy the day. From these carnivals, we were able to choose our ACS Interschool Athletics Team.
We then enjoyed participating in the ACS Athletics Carnival at Lakeside Stadium. This was Aitken’s second ACS Athletics Carnival, last year we finished 8th and in 2026, we improved, finishing 7th. However, the future is looking very bright in this space as in the age group standings, our Year 7’s actually finished 2nd, which is an outstanding result!
ACS Winter Season- Girls AFL. Both our Intermediate and Senior girls AFL teams continue to show their dominance in the midst of some loses due to injuries. These teams are exciting to watch and the future of this sport at the College is looking very bright, especially considering the number of students who are playing with both the Calder Cannons and Vic Metro!
Yr 9 $20 Boss. Our Year 9 Commerce students successfully ran their market stall day in the CPA Plaza as part of the $20 Boss program. In this program, students are given $20 which is used to start a business. They then develop a business plan and purchase resources. On the market day they (hopefully) make their $20 back, cover the costs of purchasing and potentially make a profit. This is great way to develop the students’ entrepreneurial minds.
ACS Chess. Earlier this term our Aitken Chess club had the chance to compete and challenge the other ACS school in the annual ACS Chess competition. I would like to congratulate Parthiv Pramod in Year 8 who was our best placed Aitken student.
VCE Play. During the first held of term 2, our Year 12 VCE Theatre Studies students had the chance to perform their play in the CPA, which was a major component of their assessment. The play ‘You & I’ was both a heart-warming and tear-jerking play with a twist at the end. I’d like to congratulate Amelia Birchmore, Olivia Healy, Oliver Pedersen and Kinman Yu for their amazing efforts and talents.
Winter Soiree. On 1 June, our instrumental music students had the chance to show their talents in this annual event. This event was attended by many proud parents, uncles and aunties and some grandparents.
Exams 10 & 11. Our Year 10 and 11 students had their end of semester exams in the final weeks of the term. These exams are a great time to realistically see the strengths and weaknesses of each student, however, also is a time to teach the students exam skills, study skills and generally take the fear out of exams, building skills they need and giving them the best opportunities to perform well on their Year 12 exams that are fast approaching.
2028 Year 7 testing. It’s hard to think that we’re already looking at the graduating class of 2034! Our admissions team conducted our annual Grade 5 testing for potential students during the first week of the June break. Our 2028 Year 7 cohort will be 182 students (7 classes of 26 students), 78 students from the Aitken College Primary school and 104 from external schools.
Chris Monos. As a school we’re celebrating Mrs Chris Monos. Chris has graciously, enthusiastically and faithfully served our College as a Head of Year for the past 23 years. Chris is taking the remainder of the year off as Long Service Leave and will continue to teach at the College in 2027. We hope and pray that she enjoys a well-earned break and takes time to relax in the Greek Islands (I’m jealous)! Mr Daniel Schembri will be taking over for the remainder of the year as Head of Year 12.
As we start our holiday, we hope and pray that you all take the time to refresh and refuel.
