The Health and Physical Education faculty at Aitken College empowers students to develop lifelong fitness, teamwork, and well-being skills. Through diverse activities and theoretical learning, students build physical competence, health knowledge, and personal confidence.
Year 7 Health and Physical Education introduces students to team building and cooperation through minor games, athletics, and kicking-based invasion games. In Semester 2, students engage with striking and fielding sports, gymnastics, and culturally significant NAIDOC games, as well as martial arts. These activities foster collaboration, coordination, and a respect for cultural diversity.
Year 8 Physical Education expands on these foundations with target games, net and wall games, and invasion sports. Dance is introduced, combining physical fitness with creativity and rhythm, culminating in a dance assignment. The year concludes with striking and fielding sports and tennis, encouraging skill development across various sporting domains.
Year 9 Physical Education focuses on a variety of athletic disciplines, including net and wall games, invasion sports, and target games. Students participate in self-defence and explore non-traditional sports, broadening their understanding of physical activity and its cultural significance. Assignments and case studies deepen their analytical skills and understanding of physical performance.
Year 10 Physical Education prepares students for VCE studies through a focus on health and fitness, advanced body systems, and critical thinking in sports. Students gain a deeper understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the factors that influence performance, providing a strong foundation for specialised study.
VCE options include Health and Human Development (Units 1–4), which explores health from individual, community, and global perspectives. Physical Education (Units 1–4) investigates the biomechanics, physiology, and psychology of performance. The VET Sport and Recreation program (Units 1–4) offers practical skills and theoretical knowledge for a future in the sports and fitness industries.
The Health and Physical Education faculty encourages students to lead active, healthy lives and equips them with the skills to pursue personal and professional goals in health, fitness, and sport.
