Performing Arts Education Helps Students Find Their Voice

Subjects such as Theatre Studies, Music, and Media are sometimes misunderstood as pathways designed solely to produce actors, musicians, or filmmakers. In reality, their purpose is far broader and far more valuable. These subjects are not just about performance outcomes; they are about equipping students with essential skills that extend well beyond the stage, studio, or screen.

At the heart of Performing Arts education is the development of creative and critical thinkers. Students learn to generate ideas, take intellectual risks, solve complex problems, and reflect on their own learning processes. Whether interpreting a script, composing a piece of music, or analysing media, they are constantly engaging in higher-order thinking.

Equally important is the emphasis on collaboration and communication. A production cannot succeed without teamwork. Students must listen, adapt, negotiate, and contribute meaningfully to a shared vision. These experiences build confidence, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with others; skills that are vital in any future pathway.

The Performing Arts also nurture a strong sense of personal and social responsibility. Through storytelling and creative expression, students explore diverse perspectives and develop cultural awareness. They begin to understand their place in the world, both locally and globally, and how their voice can contribute to meaningful conversations.

These outcomes align closely with the internationally recognised 21st-century learning skills.

The Australian Curriculum highlights seven General Capabilities. Performing Arts subjects contribute to all seven:

You can hear more about these worthwhile subjects and the opportunities they offer from the teachers and students currently involved at the VCE Subject Expo on Thursday, 28 May. This will be a chance for students in Year 9 and 10 to start considering their VCE Pathways.
