Parent, student and teacher interviews are an important opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school. While continuous feedback through AIMS keeps parents and carers updated on progress, these meetings allow parents/carers, students and teachers to have meaningful conversations about learning, wellbeing and future goals.
The purpose of these interviews is not simply to discuss grades. They are an opportunity to build positive relationships and support positive approaches to learning.
When students are included in the conversation, it strengthens their ownership of learning. Interviews give students the chance to reflect on their progress, consider the effort they are putting into their learning, and share what they feel they have achieved so far. They also provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to demonstrate to students how valued their learning is by taking the time to discuss it together.
This reflection helps students develop self-awareness and responsibility for their learning. As education researcher John Hattie notes, “Evidence shows that the greatest effects on student learning occur when students become their own teachers through self-monitoring and self-assessment.” For this to occur, students need opportunities to reflect and to be part of the conversation.
Preparing for the interview can help families make the most of the time together. Talking with your child beforehand and asking open-ended questions about what they are enjoying, what they find challenging, and whether there is anything they would like to ask their teacher can help guide the discussion.
While interviews are a valuable opportunity to connect, families do not need to wait for interview evenings if they have questions or concerns. AIMS provides ongoing visibility of results and feedback throughout the year. If parents or carers notice results trending downwards, or have concerns about their child’s learning or wellbeing, we encourage them to speak with their child and contact their teacher so any concerns can be addressed early.
Parent/student/teacher interviews are ultimately about partnership. When students see parents/carers and teachers working together, they feel supported, motivated and confident in their learning journey.
Interviews will be conducted online on 26 March and 1 April.
Bookings will open next week. Keep an eye on AIMS for the link.
