STEAM Program

At Aitken College, our STEAM program is designed to inspire students to apply their understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics to real-world issues through creative and purposeful problem-solving. Building on the foundations of our STEM initiatives, STEAM recognises that the design thinking process and the creation of effective, human-centred solutions are not complete without the artistic elements that bring ideas to life. Skills such as visual communication, technical drawing, creativity, and aesthetic judgement play a vital role in shaping innovative and sustainable outcomes.

Our commitment to STEAM begins in the primary years. The PYP cycle of inquiry naturally aligns with design thinking, encouraging students from Prep to Year 4 to question, explore, and experiment as they develop early critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Throughout the year, our Years 5 and 6 students engage in a rich sequence of hands-on projects that progressively build their confidence and capability as designers and problem solvers. They apply the design thinking process to engineer and test plane launchers, exploring forces, motion, and iterative improvement. Students then respond to a real-world challenge by designing and constructing chairs for refugee camps where children lack seating, using Make-Do kits to prototype practical, human-centred solutions. Sustainability is further explored through the Precious Plastics program, where students investigate recycling systems and transform plastic waste into new, purposeful products. Later in the year, they deepen their understanding of technology and systems thinking by creating and experimenting with electrical circuits using Makey-Makey circuit kits, combining coding, circuitry, and creativity to design interactive projects. These experiences ground students in environmental responsibility while igniting their curiosity for how STEAM can shape a better future.

As students move into secondary school, they encounter a range of opportunities to apply STEAM thinking in increasingly sophisticated ways. Our Year 8 elective invites students to design wearable technologies using sustainable fabrics and to program and build LEGO Mindstorms robots, with sustainability forming the foundation of both projects. Beginning in 2027, a new and challenging Year 9 STEAM elective will offer students the chance to deepen their design thinking skills, explore complex global issues, and create functional prototypes that draw on the full breadth of STEAM disciplines. In Year 10, students take part in an aviation-focused program where they explore flight mechanics, aeronautical engineering, and innovation in sustainable aviation.

Beyond classroom learning, our STEAM Ambassadors program invites students from Years 7 to 12 to develop leadership skills as they design and deliver their own STEAM activities for primary students. Through this initiative, older students serve as mentors and role models, encouraging younger learners to explore the possibilities within STEAM. Our EngGirls program, offered to Year 9 and 10 students, aims to support young women in engineering, mathematics, and STEAM-related fields. Through hands-on projects, interviews with scientists, and a range of incursions and excursions, EngGirls helps reduce gender disparity in STEAM and empowers girls to see themselves as future innovators and problem solvers.
