VCE is an exciting time for students, but it can also feel daunting. Choosing which subjects to study in Years 11 and 12 is one of the most significant decisions a young person will make during their schooling. There are many factors that shape that choice: interest in a particular area, proven strengths from previous years, tertiary pathway requirements, and family expectations.

That's why our Careers team dedicates a whole term to working with Year 10 students, ensuring they're well-informed and well-supported before subject selection formally opens in Term 3.

One of the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of building a VCE program is balance and breadth.

Aitken College offers a wide variety of subjects, yet many of them are passed over in favour of the more traditionally academic options. Subjects like Art Creative Practice, Agriculture and Horticulture, Applied Computing, Food Studies, Media, Music Performance, Theatre Studies, Product Design, Systems Engineering, and Visual Communication and Design each combine genuine academic rigour with creative agency, giving students a different and valuable way to engage their minds.

Year after year, our highest-achieving students demonstrate that pairing subjects like these alongside subjects from English, Sciences, Mathematics, Indonesian, Commerce, and Humanities doesn't dilute their results, it strengthens them. A well-rounded subject selection sets students up not just for success in Year 12, but for getting the most out of their final years at school.

Aitken College also offers two Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses as part of our VCE programs. VET Business and VET Sport and Recreation can each be studied as individual subjects within either the standard VCE or VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM).

VCE VM is an alternative pathway to obtaining a VCE certificate, offering project-based units that focus on applied learning and industry training. VCE VM students may choose to study an external TAFE or VET course or complete their VCE entirely at school by selecting our internal VET subjects. This pathway is particularly well-suited to students looking to enter the workforce or pursue an apprenticeship after Year 12.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that students are given the agency to make their own informed decisions, to choose subjects they're genuinely interested in and will be dedicated to. There is no single right combination, and every student's VCE journey is their own.

To help students explore their option, all Year 9 and Year 10 students and their parents are invited to attend our VCE Expo. They are encouraged to ask questions about the different subjects and pathways on offer.
